The PERFECT Homework Station

Let’s face it, most of us spend the first 30 minutes of homework time gathering supplies.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you had a central place in your house to always do homework?

Well this idea is going to tick all your boxes for a homework station! This homework station will keep all your needed supplies in one central spot. No more searching for what you need at homework time. Thus, freeing up your valuable time to help with homework or just getting them a snack for homework time.  I can think of many other things I would rather concentrate my time on.

By now I bet you are asking. ” What is a homework station?”

A homework station is a place to organize and store all of the tools your kids need to complete their homework. Plain and Simple.

“How do you make a homework station?”

Here are a few things to consider:

  1. You will need to select the space that you are going to designate your Homework Station.  This could be in an office, an extra bedroom, your kitchen table, anywhere that you have the space.
  2. What goes in those storage containers completely depends on what age group your children are and their individual needs.  I have come up with a list of general items to include:

Pens, Pencils

Markers, Crayons, Map Pencils

Tape, Glue, Stapler, Eraser

Paper- Lined, Colored, Graph, Copy

Ruler, Compass, Protractor

Scissors

Calculator

Timer- to help keep the kiddos focused on homework during homework time…

Spiral Notebook

Folders

This list may include everything you need, or you may need to add some items or some items you might not want or need.

3. You will need various storage containers.  Plastic shoe boxes, plastic bins, cups, mason jars… You decide. The mason jars with cute chalkboard labels on them are perfect.

If you are short on space, I found these colorful shower caddies are perfect for storage in a cabinet, and just get them out when you need them.

Everything is stored in the caddie.

You too can try and create a space in your home that is functional and makes you and your family happy. Creating a functional homework space doesn’t have to be costly either, a lot of the items , such as the storage containers and other things you may find around your home and simply just shop your home for them. Viola!

I think this kinda goes along the same lines as not doing homework, or working in your bed… Psychologically your bed is a spot for sleep, and if you do other things in bed you might not be able to sleep. Having dedicated workspace can psychologically put you in the right frame of mind to buckle down and get your homework done.

Haha, most of the time, I procrastinate by organising things! This is so true and funny. But I guess I wouldn’t have that excuse anymore if everything was already there and ready!

  4. This is such a great post/idea! I did something similar for my kids over the summer by upgrading their “art station” and wrote a few posts on it. The place we do homework right now is also where we eat dinner – it’s the room with the fewest distractions – but each girl has a “homework box” with all her supplies, so she can easily pack them away and tuck them under the china hutch when it’s time to set the table for dinner! 🙂
